Uthando is now partnering with an established Voluntourism Company based in Cape Town. This programme facilitates an interaction with the aim of bringing communities and tourism together to provide travellers with the opportunity to make a sustainable impact on communities in Africa, through short term volunteering opportunities. The current projects include taking physical education classes at the local Primary School, conducting reading clubs at the community library and assisting at the Edu-Care centre through entertaining and tutoring young disadvantaged children. STANDARD VOLUNTEERING, 2-4 WEEKS

Cape Town Teaching and Community Development:
Township schools on the outskirts of Cape Town have meagre and ill-equipped classrooms and facilities. As a volunteer you’ll assist to educate and entertain disadvantaged and vulnerable children, while helping to uplift the community through education and building projects.

Volunteers will work at one of two little pre-schools situated in Redhill township and will work in the following areas:
• Assistant teaching: Provide individual attention and assistance to children during lessons
• Help with crafts, painting, reading and games
• Organize special needs classes for children who have not been able to keep up with the pace of the classes
• Help with giving the children their meals. Every child receives a meal, which is often their only meal that day.
• Help clean, maintain and even refurbish the classrooms, most of which are quite run down.

After having spent the morning at the primary school, volunteers will assist in the local community in various afternoon community projects and will rotate between building and painting schools, assisting in the Educare centre and working in existing programs at the Masiphumelele Library.

Cape Town Sports Coaching and Physical Education:
Bring fresh ideas and stimulation to disadvantaged children through sports by assisting in running Physical Education lessons each day at the local township Primary School, from 8.30am until 12.30.

After having spent the morning at the primary school, volunteers will assist in the local community in various afternoon community projects and will rotate between building and painting schools, assisting in the Educare centre and working in existing programs at the Masiphumelele Library.

Cape Town Medical and Clinic Assistance:
The outskirts of Cape Town are some of the poorest areas in Africa and there are countless possibilities to impact the lives of those that are affected by these difficulties through this project.

As a volunteer, you will spend each morning of the week at a clinic within the various communities that we work with. The clinics run from 08h00 – 12h30 daily and you will be involved in the following:
• Assisting the clinic supervisors those children requiring medical help
• Assisting in pregnancy testing, baby weighing, the checking of vitals
Assist in sorting medications in the clinic pharmacy as well as labelling these medications
• Administration work in the clinic would also form part of your volunteer work as there are plenty of patient files that need uploading onto the clinic computer system.

St Lucia Medical Outreach and HIV/AIDS Awareness:
Surrounding the beautiful area of St Lucia are rural villages which have little resources for healthcare for the thousands of people that live there. Through working with care givers in the community a volunteer will aim to increase the support available and make a difference to peoples’ lives and health. This is through the direct assistance given on home based care visits and by educating and supporting people to live healthier, in a sustainable way. With HIV being such an impact on the communities, raising awareness and educating people on this virus to people young and old is also an important part of this project. This project with its variety and direct positive impact on individuals and families really is an unforgettable, life changing experience.

St Lucia Orphan Day Care and HIV/AIDS Education:
In the impressive setting of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, which has recently been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we offer you the opportunity to interact with and educate AIDS orphans in an Orphan Day Care Centre, alongside other exciting community outreach initiatives which include: HIV / AIDS awareness programme, assisting at a local orphanage, farming to encourage positive living, refurbishment of community buildings and helping at an after-school reading club with high school students.

St Lucia Wildlife Photography:
In the impressive setting of St Lucia Wetlands Park, this unique programme offers photography enthusiasts the opportunity to get a different perspective on Africa...
Our Wildlife Photography and Conservation Education project offers a varied range of photography and conservation components. Volunteers will start with an in-depth orientation, followed by an intensive 3 day photography course with a professional wildlife photographer to improve on your photography skills. A further 3 weeks will be spent photographing the phenomenal wildlife in the renowned local National Parks, which boast all of Africa's Big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard).

Livingstone Teaching, Orphan Care and Community Development:
As a teaching volunteer you will spend your mornings in one of 6 of our community schools, that are positive environments to orphans and vulnerable children alike. You will be assigned a class and will provide assistance to your teacher. While the teacher is in front of the classroom, teaching a class, it is extremely valuable to have a teaching assistant who can go around and help individuals' children with their assignments. Since classes are usually very large, the pupils do not often get this individual attention, so any extra attention they receive is highly appreciated.

Livingstone Clinic and Medical Outreach:
Medical Volunteers spend their time providing much needed assistance within the medical establishments of Livingstone. You do not need to be qualified for our Medical Project; you just need the desire to Impact!
The Medical Project consists of 3 main areas of work:
The Clinics - The role of the volunteer within a clinic is to provide back up and assistance to a very understaffed medical establishment.
Maramba Old People's Home - Medical volunteers provide assistance by helping the elderly residents with their laundry, tidying and cleaning their living areas, working in the vegetable garden which feeds the residents.

Home Based Care - Our volunteers accompany community volunteers as they visit bed ridden or immobile patientsacross Livingstone

Livingstone Sports Development and Community Project:
Sports volunteers spend their time training, guiding and working with soccer teams in the Livingstone community as well as physical education in schools which is sorely neglected due to lack of trained teachers. We believe sport is an essential and effective tool to teach about various subjects such as HIV, Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle. You will also get involved in other exciting community projects in Livingstone.

HIV/AIDS Orphan Work in Hospitals and Slums in Kenya:
Kenya's population is hugely affected by the struggles of HIV/AIDS, poverty and unemployment. It is known to be one of the poorest countries in Africa. There are countless possibilities to impact the lives of those that are affected by HIV/AIDS related problems, such as in the Nairobi slums, surrounding orphanages, schools, and hospitals.

Teaching Enrichment and Community Outreach in Kenya:
Though stricken with poverty and hardships, the people of Kenya are generally literate. It's estimated that approximately 90% of adult males, and 80% of adult females are able to read and write. While the basics are covered, more advanced education is not as widespread. On average, children go to school for only 9 or 10 years.

As a teaching volunteer you will spend your time providing much needed assistance with the often understaffed, under-resourced and overcrowded educational establishments of Limuru and Nairobi Slum area. African Impact aims to provide a supporting role and through the help of our volunteers we aim to enrich the learning process for all involved. We work closely with the teachers to establish and enhance lessons plans which promote active participation and understanding.

Masai Mara Wildlife Research and Conservation:
As a volunteer on this project, which borders the famous Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, you will have the unique opportunity to get involved in vital conservation and wildlife research. Assist with exciting lion research, the development of a local wildlife guiding school for sustainable development and the Green Villages conservation project - all within sight of the breathtaking wildlife-filled Mara plains.

Zanzibar Teaching and Community:

With easy access to Tanzania's mainland and safari opportunities, the project base is on the east coast of the island in a long village set on a pristine stretch of coastline. In these spectacular surroundings we invite you to join our work in various teaching, community and environmental programmes.

Volunteer involvement includes:
• Teaching English to children, teachers and local adults (This is where a TEFL qualification comes in handy, although it isn't an absolute must).
• Singing and dancing with children in English and local languages.
• Developing the children’s creative skills through crafts such as painting, drawing and colouring.
• Playing developmental games with the children .
• Work on the project will be focused on manual labour, such as painting, repair work, and possibly some building, depending on what we needs to be done at that time
• Environmental maintenance work such as litter pick-ups and planting trees

Mozambique Pre School Orphan Teaching and Community Project:
This project is set in the small tropical beach town of Vilanculos. The project involves various aspects of community work and development in and around the area.

We spend our mornings at a local preschool and most afternoons involved in a number of other exciting community initiatives including language lessons, orphan care, rural home building and sports coaching.

Teaching aspects will include:

Singing and dancing with the children in English, Portguese and Xitsua
• Developing the children’s imagination and creative skills through crafts such as painting, drawing and coloring
• Teaching basic lessons about colors, numbers, letters and knowledge of the world in English with the assistance of a translator
• Giving the children the opportunity to let off some steam through fun games and structured physical education classes
• Helping to prepare lunch for the children
• General upkeep of the school to keep it a pleasant environment in which to learn
• Some basic work at the preschool farm, aimed at providing a source of sustainable income for the preschool

Harare HIV/AIDS Orphan Care:
Interact with orphaned and underprivileged babies, children and teenagers, and add value to their lives by changing their living conditions with your practical help, and encouraging and mentoring them.

Volunteers will assist with loving and caring for as well as mentoring orphans, from the very young to high school age. Despite the difficulties they have faced, these children are still so full of warmth and joy and are sure to be an inspiration to anyone who works alongside them. Make an impact on the lives of underprivlaged children! Act as a mentor, and a guiding and helping friend to the youths at the homes.

Livingstone Lions Rehabilitation and Release Program:
Experience incredible hands-on work with lions in their natural environment. Contribute to the welfare and rehabilitation of the cubs as they undertake pre-release training
Your primary task whilst on placement will be to assist management and their team of guides, handlers and scouts in all aspects of care for the animals in their charge; giving them the opportunities to develop their natural instincts in preparation for their release into the next stage of the program.
Research is a significant part of your role; collecting data not only on the development of the lions, but also joining our elephant monitoring team in the National Park. You will also help us with our various community programs that may include conservation or health education as well as a number of other projects that you will told about on arrival.

Antelope Park African Lion Rehabiltation:
Walk and work with lions in this exclusive private game reserve. Be involved in the research of lions' behaviour and work with us on the world's only programme for their release into the wild. Also assist with orphaned Elephants and the wildlife management and boundary patrols of the reserve.
This breeding and rehabilitation project is a World First and is supported by leading ecologists in this field. We invite you to walk and work with African Lions, and to be involved in our in-depth research and data-collection activities. Spending time with the lions in the wild each day is an essential part of the cub’s upbringing.
You will also have the opportunity to spend time with our orphaned African Elephants and their trainers.

Victoria Falls African Lion Rehabilitation and Conservation:
Against the backdrop of the majestic Victoria Falls, this project is a combination of work on our lion breeding and rehabilitation programme that is an extension of our Antelope Park programme, along with National Parks conservation work and conservation education in the local school.
The work is varied and will include:

Lion Walks:
Spending time with the lions in the wild each day is an essential part of the cubs upbringing.
Alongside the walks you will be involved in the care of the animals which overnight in enclosures. They need feeding, cleaning, and occasionally will need veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health.
Research:
lion walks offer unique opportunities to observe lions close up in their natural environment with the data collected assisting us to make the best decisions for the animal’s welfare and eventual release. Volunteers will assist our research technician in gathering and analyzing this vital data. You will receive all the training you need in order to ensure that you are able to provide valuable input to this program regardless of previous experience.
