Iminathi Educare / Thokozani Together Centre

Uthando has worked with Mhla and the Thokozani Youth Project since 2009. Mhla has been an amazing partner and we have come along way since the days when Thokozani had no centre of their own. They have worked hard and have been a reliable and trustworthy partner on the ground. We are now pleased and proud to embark on a construction project to Inimathi / Thokozani to have their own decent, clean and proper facility. EVERY single cent donated to Uthando for this purpose will be spent on the actual project, not 1 cent is used for overhead or expenses on our part.

The costs are as follows :

Constructions costs: R1 068 616.62

Architects Fees: R21 180.00 (the architect has already been paid a deposit and work has begun)

Total  R1 089 796.62

(there will be some additional costs related to administrative issues such as legal fees and lodging plans with the city etc)

Mhlangabezi and his wife Lindelwa started the Thokozani Centre in response to the specific problems confronting their community. As the morning dawns, parents drop their children off at the early childhood education centre (Iminathi Educare). As the day progresses, families visit the centre to use the laundry services and children’s library, and receive mentorship from the dedicated librarians on site through Libromat. In the afternoon, the centre is used as a homework club run by volunteers from the community; and as evening begins to set the youth choir rehearses. Finally, at night and on weekends, the centre is used for community meetings.

Iminathi Educare

Lindelwa manages 3 other full-time teachers, who work with over 90 children on a daily basis. Parents drop their children off early for an entire day of activities, as well as nutritious meals. Each teacher is pursuing further studies in Early Childhood Development.

Thokozani Youth Choir

Mhlangabezi offers world-class mentorship to more than 30 youth, who meet regularly for choir practice. The group made it to the semi-finals of South Africa’s Got Talent in both 2013 and 2014, and have performed both nationally and overseas. They have produced two albums: Sigalelekile iStars (2010) and Masibuyelembo (2014). They are available for bookings

Libromat

Libromat offers parents affordable laundry services, parental education, and access to a children’s library – transforming the chore of hand-washing clothes into the pleasure of reading with your child! For more information, visit

Homework Club

In the afternoon, more than 45 school students come to the centre to study and receive support with their homework. A second club has been opened on the other side of Town Two, serving 20 children. Both of these sessions are run by volunteers from Khayelitsha, and every three months meetings are held with the parents.
Creating Employment

In an effort to create youth employment, Thokozani Together has helped 3 youth in the community create their own business washing dustbins on a weekly basis. They currently serve over 30 families. In addition, the centre holds a monthly  market featuring both new and used clothes.

Camps

Once a year, Thokozani Together takes the 60 students in the homework club on a camp. As well as being a welcome adventure, students receive tutoring in preparation for their exams. The tutors also use this opportunity to receive feedback, and monitor students’ progress across the year.
Community Involvement

Thokozani Together is there for the community.  The hall is used regular for community meetings (such as for stokvels and burial societies). The jungle gym provides a safe and fun space to play in the afternoon for children under the age of 10. The computers and library on site are open to all residents. Finally, the organisation has been pro-active in planting trees and plants.
