Post 1994 there has been a significant increase in gender based violence against black lesbians
in townships .
When we formed LulekiSizwe LBT Womyn’s Project it was to respond to the need to provide
safe space and support networks to address the needs of black LBT womyn in urban and rural
townships. The idea to establish a community-based organization came about as we began to
reflect in our circles, that quite a number of lesbians are experience violent rapes and as a result
become victims of HIV AIDS. This is not an issue that is often talked about or recognized,
because lesbian in general is seen as the least vulnerable of all group to become infected with
HIV Aids
Apart from gender based violence lesbians in townships are discriminated against both in their immediate families and the broader community.
The reality is that lesbian is been seen as unAfrican which means that expressing one’s sexuality is dangerous.
