Masibulele, which means “We Give Thanks” in isiXhosa, is an early childhood development center founded in 1995 by Thandi Xaba, for the children of the Khayelitsha community. Responding to the burgeoning demand for daycare centers and early childhood education in her area, Thandi started Masibulele Educare. She utilized a plot of informal structures as space for young children to receive the necessary care and supervision, in the absence of their working parents. In 2015, Thandi’s daughter, Patricia, took over the Educare center as principal of the school, which now caters to more than 140 children ranging in age between infant and six years old. With Uthando’s generous donors and supporters’ help, Masibulele has raised funds to achieve recognized status in the government’s eyes. The Educare center has blossomed into a school that nurtures growth and learning. Through its involvement in the community, it will stand for future generations as a place that provides hope and inspiration for the young lives it serves. Thandi chose the name ‘Masibulele’ to thank the families who trusted her and her vision of the community’s future by sending their children to the Educare center.
