eKhaya eKasi Art & Education Center is a non-profit organization based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. In support of the economic development of women and children through promoting education, well-being, and creativity, the center serves as a community resource and oasis of hope for families impacted by extreme poverty. A strong ethos of helping people to help themselves by encouraging self-expression and self-love, eKhaya eKasi translates to “Home In The Hood.” The non-profit facilitates a variety of programs that uplift and support a community of more than 400 residents. From after-school activities for children to develop creative and entrepreneurial skills in adults, each program employs the individual’s strengths and empowers them. Handmade crafts and pieces of art are available to purchase at the center’s Art Boutique, in support of the artists’ efforts. Other programs include The Rooftop Garden – where organic vegetables are grown as a source of agricultural education and nutrition. The Soup Kitchen feeds over 75 families weekly, in an act to combat malnutrition. EKhaya eKasi hosts the annual World AIDS Day community awareness event.
