Khayelitsha Youth Choir (KYC) was formed in October 2018 in Harare Khayelitsha, formerly known as Isiphiwo Art Group. The name change was as a result of the choir embarking on a more developmental focused vision of not only offering music but also contributing to the empowerment of young people in Khayelitsha by providing educational and social support. Mihle Mtitshana founded the choir so as to educate and train the youth in music, performance, drumming and poetry. One other aspect he looked at in forming the choir was to address youth unemployment, with some of the choir members having dropped out of school, participating in the choirs activities provided them with a platform to change their lives for the better.

KYC has more than 60 members from the ages of 14 years to 28 years, singing mostly traditional choral and pop & soulful culture music. Their biggest aspiration is to travel the country and the world sharing their knowledge of music and also learning different musical genres and techniques so as to improve their talents. The choir performs in events around their community such as weddings, choir competitions and church services.

Since Uthando’s connection and relationship with the choir in March 2022, the choir has had the pleasure of performing along side one of South Africa’s legendary and iconic artist PJ Powers and her band at the 25th birthday celebration of the Table Bay Hotel and the We Are Africa trade show that gave the choir their first professional gig. With many excursions brought by Uthando SA to the townships, the choir has became a household name with events companies and organizers booking them.
