Ulwazi, “Knowledge” in isiXhosa, Educare, was opened in 1998 by founder Patiswa Patience Bangani in the community of Delft to protect the children from child abuse, drugs, and fight poverty. The Early Childhood Development Center (ECD) provides care for children whose mothers work and leave them with unemployed fathers, neighbors, immediate family members, or, alone. Ulwazi is a registered NPO for children up to 6 years of age and caters for 120 children. In 2010 funds were raised to provide shipping containers for the classrooms, which are very basic and not conducive to learning and education. The ECD currently consists of shipping containers and prefabricated buildings. These materials certainly are better than shacks but still a far cry from decent premises. In summer, the structures are stiflingly hot and in winter, extremely cold.
The current goal of Patiswa’s for the Ulwazi Educare is to raise funds to construct a new building for the ECD to l provide a safe environment, inspiring creativity, and quality learning. The new build will enable the center to cater to the community at scale, including a senior citizen program, support groups, and feeding schemes would be possible.
