Sustainable food gardens for Hanover Park

On the 10th of September, Uthando hosted an enthusiastic delegation from Hanover Park on a fact-finding mission, to discover and learn about some of the beautiful, inspirational and productive urban micro farms in Khayelitsha. Representatives from the Alcardo Andrews Foundation, Hanover Park Cricket Club and all five of the Hanover Park schools – Morgenson, Blomvlei, Athwood, Summit, Mountview and Belmor – joined in on the occasion. Visits were made to the Ikhaya “Home” Garden, run by Xolisa Bangani and his team at the Isikhokelo Primary School, as well as the Moya we Khaya “spirit of home” Garden, run by Mama Christina Kaba and her team. Discussions were had and plans are underway to develop inspiring and fruitful micro farms at all of the schools in Hanover Park; a community that has been hard hit by gangsterism, crime and violence. Watch this burgeoning space.
